Ashland College was founded on February 18, 1878, by members of the German Baptist Brethren Church with the cooperation of interested Ashland citizens. The tie with the Brethren Church continues today.

The board of Trustees of Ashland College voted on May 12, 1989, to change the name of the institution to Ashland University. The board determined that "university" more aptly describes what Ashland has become, based on its graduate programs in business and education and its professional schools of theology and nursing.
